Week 8: Finding Radio Shows To Monitor
An important strategy to help you get your own radio show is to collect intel and know what others are doing. You can then look for common themes among successful broadcasters as well as points of differentiation that will help you to stand apart and generate your own niche.
An excellent resource on line for radio in the U.S. is www.RadioLocator.com; this database is the most comprehensive radio station search engine on the internet. The site has links to over 10,000 radio station web pages and over 2500 audio streams from radio stations in the U.S. and around the world.
The best way to begin your search for other personalities and shows is to select a particular city that you’d like to investigate and monitor. Type in the name of the city into the search engine and you’ll receive a complete listing of all FM and AM radio stations in that city, or market. On that market listing is the “format” of the radio station. The formats each appeal to a different audience demographic, and some have more local “personalities” than others. For example, many News/Talk formatted stations may only have one or two local shows, while the rest are nationally syndicated. Plenty of music stations have at least one or two local personalities, especially on their morning drive programs. Click on the call letters for the station you think you’d like to monitor. Those call letters are usually a link to the station website. When you arrive at the station website, look for a “personalities” or “show schedule” tab to find out which shows are local or nationally syndicated. In many cases, the station’s stream their audio so you can listen online, and there is often individual bio information on the personality listed as well as their email address. Many personalities are really good about returning email from folks like you who are interested in getting your own radio show and are happy to answer your questions.
