Week 7: Examples of big stories this week in August 2010:
Want to exponentially increase the quality and “stickiness” of your radio
show? Keep an eye on the big stories of the day, and think of ways you can
tie into them as discussion points. Then, post juicy headlines and quick
media alerts that will point television, radio, print and on-line media pros
to you.
Examples of big stories this week in August 2010:
-Michael Douglas Throat Tumor: The mega movie star is receiving
chemotherapy and radiation treatment for a tumor in his throat; that’s a
sure sign that it’s a malignant growth. Can you interview experts on
health, Hollywood, natural healing, family/conflict (Douglas is estranged
from his son Cameron, who has major legal problems relating to his drug use
and sale), etc? Do you have a personal experience with cancer? How can you
relate to this story?
-Eli Manning’s head injury: The NFL Star had blood gushing from his head at
the Monday night pre-season game against the Jets. This is a big story,
especially if your show targets guys. Angles can include sports, injuries,
health, leadership, coaching, etc.
- A South Carolina mother claimed her children drowned when their car
careened into a river was charged with murder Tuesday after authorities said
she confessed to suffocating the two toddlers to be free of them and then
faking the accident. This taps into so many areas…and anyone with
children will be touched by this story. Discuss from the standpoint of
children’s causes, interview therapists, experts on criminal behavior,
legal, etc.
-Back To School. Anything to do with back to school is hot now; tips to
help kids (and parents) cope, how to save money on school supplies and back
to school clothes, tips for parents and students going away to college, etc.
-Ground Zero Mosque: Hugely controversial story, and listeners love
controversy. What do you have to say that’s different that other talking
heads on the subject? And, why are you qualified to comment on your show?
Do your research, take a side and invite debate from your callers.
